Government
of India confirmed that Afzal Guru has been executed at 8 am this
morning at the Tihar Jail. Mohammad Afzal Guru, is a Jaish-e-Mohammad
terrorist and is the prime accused in the attack on parliament in 2001.
He had
been sentenced for capital punishment by the Supreme Court in 2004. But
later in 2006 he had applied for mercy plea and the sentence was kept in
abeyance. However the plea was rejected by the Hon'ble President of
India on January 23, this year.
The home
ministry has taken up necessary precautions across the Jammu &
Kashmir valley to avoid any untoward incidents. Security has been
tightened and the valley had been placed under curfew.
In
December 2001, 5 heavily-armed terrorists drove into the Parliament
complex and opened fire. Nearly 9 people, mostly from the security
forces were reportedly killed. The terrorists were shot dead. Afzal was
the mastermind behind this attack.
It may be
noted that another militant Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, an accused in
the 2008 Mumbai attacks was hanged to death in November, 2012. These two
militants were facing gallows and were turning a burden to the
